Kukës, Albania, in a nutshell
Kukës lies in the north-east of Albania, close to Kosovo, on the shore of Lake Fierza and at the foot of Mount Gjallica. The lake is an artificial reservoir on the Drin, created in 1978. It covers about 72.5 km² and stretches roughly 70 km. The shoreline moves with the water level, so do not plan around a fixed edge.
Kukës is a town with a lake view, a museum and a mountain behind it. Most visitors use it as a base for something else: the ferry across Lake Koman, a hike in the Valbona valley, a tour in the Albanian Alps or a day across the border in Prizren. This guide explains each of those trips, how they connect and what they cost in 2026.

What this guide covers
Kukës is a starting point, not a single sight.
Two lakes and a valley matter here, and they are easy to mix up. Kukës stands on Lake Fierza. The ferry between Koman and Fierza sails on Lake Koman, further down the Drin. Valbona is a mountain valley reached by road from the Fierza end of the ferry. There is no ferry from Kukës to Valbona, so each leg of a trip needs its own plan.
For Kukës itself, see the page on things to do in Kukës. For the ferry, start with the Komani lake ferry page, then read about Valbona and the pass walk to Theth. If you would rather have a guide and a fixed program, compare the Albanian Alps tours.
The town has its own story. Kukës was moved when the Fierza reservoir filled, and in 1999 it received a large number of refugees from Kosovo. The history page sets out the dates. For the road from Tirana, the toll and the bus, see getting to Kukës, and for the seasons, the weather page.
Our picks: Albanian Alps and Kosovo tours
Nearly every tour here starts in Tirana, Durrës or Shkodër, not in Kukës. The two-day Valbona trip is the simplest mix for most people: ferry both ways, the road transfer, a night and two meals. The three-day tours add a guide and a night in the mountains, and the Kosovo day trip is for you if you want Prizren rather than the lake.

A few things to know before you go
The points that most often change a plan.
Two lakes, one ferry
Kukës is on Lake Fierza. The Koman to Fierza ferry crosses Lake Koman. Valbona is reached from the Fierza end by road, not by boat.
Ferry guide →The ferry price depends on how you pay
Cash fares and online fares differ, and a 5 percent surcharge can apply to PayPal. A foot passenger pays €10 or ALL 1,000 in cash; the online fare is €8.80 to €9 (2026).
Fares and timetable →Book the car space first
A confirmed ferry reservation is needed before a car drives through the tunnel to the terminal. Do not park at the terminal or in the tunnel.
Cars and parking →The Valbona pass follows snow, not the ferry season
In May 2026 the national park authority still warned of snow and avalanche sections on the winter route. A running ferry does not mean a safe pass.
Valbona and Theth →Prizren fortress is partly open
The fortress closed in August 2026 for securing work and partly reopened on 7 September 2026. Work areas stay closed. The old town is not affected.
Prizren guide →Documents for Kosovo
German citizens can cross with a passport or a regular ID card valid for at least 3 months. Checks have been stricter since 15 March 2026.
Border details →Plan the arrival by road
Kukës has an airport south of town, but do not count on scheduled passenger flights in 2026. Buses and cars are the dependable options.
