Kukës weather in short
Kukës lies in a basin at the foot of Gjallica in north-east Albania, next to Lake Fierza. The seasons are clear. July and August are the warmest months, January is the coldest, and the average night temperature is below freezing from December to February.
The figures below are long-term averages for the Kukës weather station, for the period 1961 to 1990. They show what a normal month looks like, not what the weather will do on your dates, so check a forecast a few days before you travel. They describe the town only. The high mountains of Valbona and Theth follow their own conditions, and snow there matters more than the temperature in Kukës.
If you want to combine a lake day with a hike, read this page together with the guides to the Komani Lake ferry and the Valbona valley. Both have seasons of their own.

Best time to visit Kukës
There is no single best month. It depends on what you plan to do.
| Plan | Best months | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Town, museum and a Prizren day trip | April to June and September to October | Mild days. July and August reach 28.8°C on average. |
| Komani Lake ferry | Mid-April to 5 November | Daily service from mid-April to 5 November. The first sailings fall between 11 and 15 April. |
| Valbona to Theth hike | June to September | October only in good conditions. Snow can remain in May. |
| Winter visit | December to February | Cold nights, and mountain roads can stay impassable longer. |
For most visitors, May to June and September are the easiest months: warm days, the ferry running and, from June, the high trails coming into season. Our north Albania route follows that window.
Snow, rain and heat: what changes your plans
Weather matters most in the mountains and on the roads.
Snow on the Valbona route
The walking season for the Valbona to Theth pass is usually June to September, and October is possible only with good conditions. In May 2026 the park authority still warned about remaining snow and avalanche sections on the winter route and advised against crossing on your own. A calendar date is no guarantee that the pass is clear. Read the Valbona guide before you plan the walk.
Mountain roads in winter
Mountain roads can stay impassable for longer in winter, and heavy rain can close roads through floods and landslides. Keep a spare day in the plan when you drive to or from the mountains.
Summer heat and fire risk
In summer, open fires and grilling are banned because of the risk of forest fires. Bring water and sun protection for walks, and do not light fires on the slopes or at the lake.
Help in the mountains
Paths can be poorly marked and rescue services are limited. The emergency number in Albania is 112. Tell your host where you are going and when you plan to be back.
What to pack for Kukës
The temperature range in the table is wide, so plan in layers.
Between April and October you need light clothes for the day and a warm layer for the evening, because average minimums run from 6.2°C in April to 15.6°C in July. In spring and autumn, pack a rain jacket as well, and sturdy shoes if you will hike. From November to March, bring a warm coat, a hat and gloves.
If you travel to Valbona for a hike, add sun protection and plenty of water in summer, and warm clothes for higher ground even in July. Check the current conditions with your guesthouse or guide the evening before you set out. Details on reaching the town are on the getting there page, and the places worth a stop are on the things to do page.
