Prizren from Kukës at a glance

A Prizren day trip from Kukës takes you across the border to the old town of Prizren in Kosovo. The road distance is about 39 km. You leave Albania at the Morinë crossing and enter Kosovo at Vërmica. It is roughly 19 km from Kukës to the crossing and roughly 19 km from the crossing to Prizren.

Those are distances, not travel times. The crossing can add waiting time that nobody can predict, so plan a full day and do not book a tight return.

Border and documents

What German citizens need. Other nationalities should check their own government's advice before the trip.

ID for the crossing

A passport or a regular national ID card is accepted. A provisional ID card is not. Your document should be valid for at least 3 months. Entry is visa-free for up to 90 days.

Registration

Foreign nationals must register within 3 days at the border or at the nearest police station. This has been checked more strictly since 15 March 2026. Ask the officers at the crossing how it applies to your day trip.

Car insurance

Driving into Kosovo needs additional border insurance, because Kosovo is not part of the Green Card system. If you rent a car, check two things separately: that your insurance covers Kosovo and that the rental company allows the trip.

Travel advice

Read your government's current travel advice for Kosovo before you go. It can change at short notice.

The old town and the Sinan Pasha Mosque

The historic centre is the reason to come. The Sinan Pasha Mosque stands in the historic centre at the Shatërvan. Sofi Sinan Pasha had it built in 1615. After a restoration it reopened for worshippers in 2011. It is a place of worship first, so dress and behave accordingly and check the visiting rules at the door. Check visiting hours on the spot.

Walk the lanes of the historic centre at your own pace, starting from the mosque. Leave time for the fortress as well, if the path is open.

A view over Prizren

Prizren Fortress: partly open

The fortress above the town was closed in August 2026 for safety work. It has been partly open to visitors since 7 September 2026. Some work areas stay closed, and signs show where you may walk. The view over the roofs and mosques is the reward for the climb, so it is worth going up if the path is open.

Opening times and entry fees can change. Ask in the town or check the current notice before you climb.

A suggested day in Prizren

The order that keeps the border out of your afternoon.

Before you leave Kukës

Pack your passport or regular ID card, and for a car the border insurance and the rental company's permission. Check the current notice for the fortress, because the open areas can change.

The road and the crossing

Drive the roughly 19 km to the Morinë crossing, leave Albania and enter Kosovo at Vërmica. Start early, so that a long wait at the border does not cut into your time in the town.

In Prizren

Park, or arrange your stop, in the roughly 19 km after the crossing, then start in the historic centre at the Sinan Pasha Mosque. Add the fortress if it is open, and keep time for a meal before the return.

The way back

Leave Prizren with enough margin for the crossing back into Albania. Waiting times cannot be forecast, so do not plan an evening appointment in Kukës.

Ways to do the Prizren day

The options differ in flexibility and in who handles the border.

For most visitors staying in Kukës, a day by car with the right documents and insurance gives the most time in the old town. If you do not drive, an organised trip removes the insurance question, but many of them start in Tirana or Shkodër rather than in Kukës.
