Tirana to Kukës in short

Most visitors reach Kukës from Tirana. The simplest way is the bus. A daily Euro Bus service runs from the North Bus Terminal in Tirana (Rruga Dritan Hoxha) to the Kukës bus station (Rruga Dëshmorët e Kombit). The ride takes about 3 hours and costs €8 for the whole route in 2026.

By car you take the Nation's Road, Rruga e Kombit, which runs from Milot to Morinë and passes through the Kalimash and Thirrë tunnels. It is a toll road. A car pays €5 on that section in 2026, and there is a second toll on the Thumanë to Kashar section closer to Tirana.

Kukës also has an airport, but you should not plan a trip around a scheduled flight. The section on Kukës airport below explains why. If you want to move on from Kukës, the Komani Lake ferry and the Valbona valley are the two most common next steps.

Times, terminals and prices differ between operators, so check the timetable before you go.

Other buses from Tirana

By car on the Nation's Road

The tolls below are the 2026 rates including VAT.

Vehicle classToll on the Nation's Road (2026)
Motorcycle€2.50
Car class€5
Two-axle buses and similar vehicles€11.25
Heavy three-axle vehicles€16.25

The table covers the Milot to Morinë concession with the Kalimash and Thirrë tunnel,.

Closer to Tirana there is a second toll on the Thumanë to Kashar section. It has been charged since 4 January 2025, starts at €2.50 including VAT for simple vehicles, and can be paid in cash or by bank card in euros or lek. The total for your trip depends on the junctions you use, so do not expect the whole drive to cost only €5.

The drive time from Tirana is not a fixed number. Traffic, stops and your route change it, so use a route planner on the day. If you plan to drive on to the ferry, you need a confirmed car reservation before you enter the tunnel to the terminal. Details are on the ferry page.

For most visitors without a car, the bus is the simple choice. Drive only if you need the car for several stops.

Kukës airport

The airport exists, but you cannot count on a scheduled flight.

Kukës International Airport Zayed lies south of the town, about 2.2 nautical miles (roughly 4 km) from the centre. The first commercial flight landed on 18 April 2021. Every flight operation needs prior permission, which the aircraft operator applies for at least 3 working days ahead. That rule concerns the airline, not you as a passenger.

No scheduled service for 2026 is something you can plan around. Check the airport and the airlines for current flights before you build an itinerary, and keep the bus from Tirana as your backup. If a flight is listed for your dates, confirm the airport transfer before you land, because there is no set shuttle or taxi fare.

Citizens of other countries should check their own government's travel advice before the trip. Mountain areas have poorly marked paths and limited rescue services, and the emergency number is 112. For the Kosovo border, read the Prizren page.
