Kukës hotels and other places to stay

Kukës lies in north-east Albania on Lake Fierza and at the foot of Gjallica. The town has hotels and restaurants. Around it, the region offers guesthouses and farm stays. Further north, the Valbona valley has traditional houses, mountain huts and small lodges along the hiking route.

These are three different search areas, not one. Pick the one that matches your plan: a night in town after the bus from Tirana, a base for a day trip to Prizren, or a bed in Valbona before a hike. If you want to fill your days with more than a bed, look at Albanian Alps tours and the Komani Lake ferry first, since their start times often decide where you sleep.

Ask each property for its current rate, what breakfast includes and how you pay.

Staying in Kukës town

The practical base if you arrive by bus or want to see the town.

If you take the bus from Tirana, a night in Kukës makes sense. The ride takes about 3 hours, and you arrive at the bus station on Rruga Dëshmorët e Kombit. From town you can visit the ethnographic museum in the centre, near the Exodus tower and the refugee memorial obelisk, and plan the climb of Gjallica, which reaches about 2,490 m. See the things to do in Kukës for the full list.

Kukës is also the base for a day trip to Prizren in Kosovo. The distance is about 39 km by road, and the border crossing is at Morinë, around 19 km from town. Read the Prizren day trip page for documents and the border.

Kukës sits on Lake Fierza, and the surroundings give lake and mountain views. A town address and a lakeside address are not the same thing, though. Look at the property on a map before you book, and do not assume that you can walk to the water, the bus station or a trail start.

Guesthouses around Kukës

Smaller places in the region instead of the town hotels.

The region around Kukës offers guesthouse and farm stay accommodation. They differ in size, location and season, so ask directly about opening months, the way to reach the property and the meals on offer.

Before you book, ask four things: how far the property is from the road, how guests arrive without a car, whether breakfast or dinner is included, and whether the host accepts cards or only cash in lek or euro. Do not assume that every guesthouse is open all year or takes cards.

Valbona lodges and mountain huts

Traditional houses, huts and small lodges in the valley and on the trail.

In the valley

Valbona has traditional houses and small lodges. If you arrive by ferry, a minivan runs from Fierza at 12:00, arriving around 13:00, for €8 per person in 2026. It is an extra service for guests who book another service and prepay online, not a public bus. The return pickup at your Valbona hotel runs at 10:30, reaching Fierza around 11:30, also €8.

On the hiking route

The Valbona to Theth route has mountain huts, traditional houses and small lodges. Book ahead, and carry water and food, because parts of the route pass through uninhabited country.

Roads and passes

A bed in the valley does not mean a safe pass. In May 2026 the park authority still warned about snow and avalanche sections. Read the Valbona guide and the weather page before you plan the walk.

For most first visits, sleep one night in Kukës when you arrive by bus, then move on to Valbona only if you plan to hike or take the ferry. Hikers should book Valbona ahead.

Plan the days around the ferry

Timings that decide where you sleep.

The Komani Lake ferry leaves Koman at 09:00 and Fierza at 13:00 in the timetable. Foot passengers should be at the terminal 15 minutes ahead, and cars 30 minutes ahead, with a reservation made before the car enters the tunnel to the terminal. The crossing takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. A 09:00 departure means planning the evening before so you reach the Koman terminal in time. If you drive, a private lot about 750 m (10 minutes on foot) from the terminal charges €5 for up to 24 hours. All timetable details are on the ferry page, and the route to the town is on getting there.

Kukës hotels: frequently asked questions

Are there hotels in Kukës?

Yes. The town has hotels and restaurants. Check the current offer, the exact location and what is included before you book.

Can I stay right on Lake Fierza?

Kukës lies on the lake and has views of it, but a town hotel is not automatically on the shore. Check the exact address on a map before you book if the water matters to you.

Do I need to book ahead in Valbona?

Yes, it is advised. The houses, huts and small lodges along the hiking route are few, so book ahead for the dates you plan to walk.

Are guesthouses open in winter?

Not all of them. Opening months differ by property, so ask the host directly before you travel.

Can I pay by card?

Do not assume it. Ask each property which payment methods it takes, and carry some cash in lek or euro.

Is kukes.org a hotel booking site or official?

No. This is an independent travel guide, not connected to the municipality of Kukës, the Albanian tourism agency or any hotel, ferry or tour operator, and you cannot book rooms here.
