The Valbona valley in brief

Valbona is a valley in the north of Albania, surrounded by the peaks of the Albanian Alps. Together with Theth it belongs to the Alps of Albania National Park, a protected area in category II based on a decision of 26 January 2022. The valley is known for walking, guesthouses and one long day over the mountains to the neighboring valley.

That day is the pass walk between Valbona and Theth. It is a trail between two valleys, not a road. The valley itself can be reached by minivan from Fierza at the end of the Komani lake ferry, which makes Valbona a natural next stop after the lake. Kukës is not on this route, and there is no boat from Kukës to Valbona.

Valbona to Theth: the pass walk

One long day, best with an overnight at each end.

The walk climbs to a pass at roughly 1,760 to 1,795 m and drops into the neighboring valley. Starting from Theth, the ascent is about 1,068 m and the descent 792 m. Starting from Valbona the numbers reverse. The distance depends on where you start and finish, so do not use one figure for every guesthouse.

For most walkers, treat the crossing as a full day in June to September, with a night in each valley rather than a rushed return the same day. If you would rather go with a guide, compare the Albanian Alps tours.

Snow and safety on the pass

The snow decides, not the calendar.

Late snow

In May 2026 the national park authority advised against crossing on your own because of safety risks and warned of snow and avalanche areas on the winter route. Do not assume the pass is clear from May.

The ferry does not tell you

A running ferry, a minivan or an open guesthouse says nothing about whether the pass is safe. Plan the lake and the mountain separately.

Trails and rescue

Trails can be poorly marked and rescue services are limited. The emergency number in Albania is 112.

Fire and storms

Open fires and barbecues are banned in the dry summer months because of wildfire risk. Heavy rain can wash out roads and trigger landslides.

Water and food

The route passes through uninhabited areas. Carry enough water and food for the whole day.

Guides

Local guides are an option. If conditions are uncertain, ask a guide or your guesthouse about the pass on the day.

Getting to Valbona

The usual route runs over water and then by road. Take the Komani lake ferry from Koman to Fierza, a trip of about 2 hours 30 minutes, then the minivan from Fierza. It leaves at 12:00, arrives at about 13:00 and costs €8 per person. The return pickup at Valbona hotels is at 10:30. The minivan is an add-on to another booked service with a prepaid online ticket, not a public bus.

If you prefer a fixed program, the Albanian Alps tours bundle the transfer with the trip. For a car and a ferry space, the ferry page covers fares and parking.

Valbona hotels and guesthouses

Traditional houses, mountain huts and small lodges.

Along the trail and in the valleys you will find traditional guesthouses, mountain huts and small lodges. Booking ahead is a good idea, especially for the pass days in summer. Opening dates vary, so ask each place whether it is open in your month. Ask whether a place takes cards or euros before you rely on it.

If you want a town base instead, Kukës has hotels, and the where to stay page compares the town with the surrounding area. For a longer route that links Koman, Valbona and Kukës, see the north Albania route.

Valbona and the weather

Mountain conditions differ from the town.

The temperatures for Kukës on the weather page apply to the town, not to the mountains. The pass is higher and colder, and snow lasts longer than in the valley. Use the June to September window as a starting point and check conditions close to your date.
