A North Albania Route via Kukës

A route through northern Albania that links Kukës, a day in Kosovo, the Koman ferry and the Valbona valley. Each stage has its own timetable, so the plan keeps them apart.

A north Albania route at a glance

This route starts in Tirana and runs north to Kukës, then splits into three parts: a day in Prizren in Kosovo, the ferry on the Koman Lake and the Valbona valley with an optional pass to Theth. It is a suggested plan, not a through ticket. Every stage has its own bus, boat or road, and nothing links them automatically.

That is why the plan below is in stages. If a stage does not fit your dates, you can drop it without breaking the rest.

Albania travel basics for the north

What to sort out before the first stage.

Entry

German citizens enter with a passport or a regular national ID card that is valid for at least 3 months. A provisional ID card is not accepted. Entry is visa-free for up to 90 days. Other nationalities should check their own rules.

Mountains and safety

Paths in the mountains are often poorly signed, and rescue services are limited. The emergency number is 112. In summer, open fires and barbecues are banned because of the fire risk, and heavy rain can close roads.

Seasons

In winter, mountain roads can stay impassable for longer. The weather page shows the temperature pattern for Kukës, which cannot stand in for the high Alps.

The route stage by stage

A suggested order. Add days where you want more time.

Day 1: Tirana to Kukës

By bus, the Euro Bus leaves the North Bus Terminal in Tirana (Rruga Dritan Hoxha) for the Kukës bus station. Departures run daily from 08:00 to 11:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00, the ride takes about 3 hours and the fare is €8 (2026). Other buses cost €6 and take about 2 hours 40 minutes from the East Terminal, so terminal, time and price depend on the operator. By car you take the Nation's Road (Rruga e Kombit) from Milot to Morinë, through the Kalimash and Thirrë tunnels. The toll is €5 for a car and €2.50 for a motorbike (2026), and the Thumanë to Kashar section has its own toll.

Day 2: Kukës

Use the day for the ethnographic museum, the lake views and, if you have the strength, a start on Gjallica. Gjallica is a full mountain day by itself.

Day 3: Prizren in Kosovo

Prizren is about 39 km away, across the Morinë and Vërmica crossing. Carry the right ID and border insurance for a car. The fortress is only partly open, so the old town and the Sinan Pasha Mosque are the safer plan.

Day 4: Koman ferry to Valbona

The ferry sails on the Koman Lake, not on Lake Fierza at Kukës. It leaves Koman at 09:00 and returns from Fierza at 13:00. A minivan to Valbona leaves Fierza at 12:00 and arrives at about 13:00 for €8 per person. You have to plan the road to Koman separately, so check the transport before you book.

Day 5: Valbona

Use a day in the valley for walks that suit your level, or rest before the pass.

Day 6: the pass to Theth (summer only)

This is a full hiking day of its own. Do not combine it with the ferry or a long drive on the same day. Plan the onward trip from Theth separately.

The ferry on the Koman Lake

The ferry runs daily from mid-April to 5 November. The crossing takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. A person pays €10 or ALL 1,000 in cash, and the online price is €8.80 to €9. A 5 percent fee can apply to PayPal. Foot passengers should be at the dock 15 minutes early, cars 30 minutes early.

A car needs a confirmed ferry booking before it enters the tunnel to the terminal. Do not park in the tunnel or at the terminal. A private car park about 750 m away, around 10 minutes on foot, costs €5 for up to 24 hours.

Valbona to Theth: a summer walk

The classic walk from Theth to Valbona is about 14 to 15 km and takes 6 to 8 hours, with 7 hours as the usual figure. The pass lies at roughly 1,760 to 1,795 m. From Theth the climb is about 1,068 m and the descent about 792 m. The usual season runs from June to September, and October works only in good conditions.

Do not plan the pass by the ferry season. In May 2026 the park authority still warned of snow and avalanche areas on the winter route and advised against crossing alone. Valbona and Theth are part of the Alps of Albania National Park. Along the walk you find traditional houses, huts and small lodges. Book ahead and carry water and food, because parts of the route are uninhabited.

Where the tours start

Many tours in the Albanian Alps begin in Tirana or Shkodër, not in Kukës. Before you book, check the meeting point, the date and what the price covers. A tour that starts in Tirana adds a long first leg to your day, which matters if you are already staying in Kukës.

North Albania route: frequently asked questions

How many days does a north Albania route take?

That depends on which stages you add. The stages above each take a day, and the Valbona pass needs a full day of its own. Add buffer days if you cannot afford to miss a ferry.

Is there a ferry from Kukës to Valbona?

No. The ferry runs on the Koman Lake from Koman to Fierza. A minivan continues from Fierza to Valbona. Lake Fierza at Kukës is a different lake.

Can I cross the Valbona pass in spring?

Do not count on it. In May 2026 snow and avalanche areas were still a concern on the winter route. The usual hiking season is June to September.

How do I get from Tirana to Kukës?

By bus in about 3 hours for €8 (2026), or by car on the Nation's Road with a €5 toll for cars. The Thumanë to Kashar section has its own toll.

Is kukes.org an official site?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no connection to the Municipality of Kukës, the Albanian tourism agency, ferry operators or tour companies.
